Appropriate Contact Policy
Many sports require a degree of physical contact between sports staff and children or young people, e.g. supporting and shaping a gymnast is an essential part of coaching gymnastics in that it helps the gymnast to understand shapes, movement patterns and complex skills but also reduces the risk of injury due to a fall or error in performance.
Coaches and staff have all been enhance DBS checked and have attended a Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop. In addition to this all coaches have attended a PKA approved Coaching course to ensure specific kickboxing activities are covered and risks highlighted.
Whilst some physical contact will be required as an essential part of the sport only appropriate non-invasive techniques will be used. All contact will be intended to meet the child’s needs and staff will only use physical contact if their aim is to;
• develop sports skills or techniques, for example the movement of body parts to assist in showing the correct shapes and movements for a technique.
• treat an injury, contact will be only made by a qualified first aider and will always have another adult present when administering first aid.
• prevent an injury, to help your child control balance when practicing a technique or to assist in an incorrect strike which may cause injury.
• meet the requirements of the sport, for example in assisting the child to tie a belt, fasten equipment or tie shoe laces
The coach will explain the reason for the physical contact to the child. Unless the situation is an emergency, the adult should ask the child for permission.
If a child or parent has any concerns these should be raised with the club safeguarding officer
